Byron Hinterland Tree Change renovation
HIA 2011 Winner - Renovation Project
For a professional couple living Monday to Friday in a small 2 bedroom unit on Burleigh headland there is not a better feeling on a Friday afternoon than hopping in the car for the 60min drive south to their 53 hectare tree change in the picturesque Byron Bay hinterland. Originally a standard brick and tile project home the transformation is unrecognisable from the original design. The brief was to add a main bedroom with ensuite and walk through robe. Extend the living area and add an outdoor under cover entertaining area. Sanctuary 28's director Don Cotterill was passionate about the project, 'The opportunity to work on a project with such amazing views and aspect was a real inspiration.
The house had previously ignored it's opportunity to open up to the North and catch the distant views of Mt Warning and Mt Barney' Don said. The timber decked front porch is where you leave the work boots and enter the home. The VJ lined raked ceiling provides a spacious feel and gives great volume to the main living area of the home. Instantly you are drawn to the centrally located fireplace with full height glass sliding doors on either side that form the Northern end of the home. The corner sliding doors pull back and open the home to the magnificent view. The kitchen is centrally located and serves both the inside and the outside of the home well. The recycled wide timber floor boards combined with the VJ ceiling give the home a contemporary country feel. The large timber deck under the main roof line of the home is tranquil and has a grandstand feel as the steps lead off all three sides of the deck, providing seating as well as access.
The timber floors extend down the hallway through the renovated area of the home to the main bedroom. Generous in size the bedroom has a walk through robe cleverly placed behind a wall which divides the open plan room. The ensuite is also open to the bedroom with a large bath, double vanity and frameless glass enclosures to the shower and wc. The main bedroom has it's own deck leading out to the North and once again those great views which is the main feature of the location.
The only problem now for the owner's is leaving this country haven for the working week ahead. Bring on retirement.
